This is the thirty-sixth lesson in our beginner level Spanish course and we will look at Commonly used Irregular Spanish Verbs in Present Tense.
In lesson 33 of this course we learned various Irregular Spanish Verbs in Present Tense such as Comenzar/Empezar: To start, Perder: To lose, Costar: To cost, Recordar: To remember, Pedir: To ask for/To order, Servir: To serve, and Construir: To build.
We learned that Irregular verbs do not follow the same patterns as Regular verbs and we have to remember each specific conjugation.
In this lesson we will learn some Commonly used Irregular Spanish Verbs which are also very easy ones to remember!
The Irregular verbs we learned in lesson 33 were trickier to conjugate than the ones we will learn here as their verb endings were different for all persons except Nosotros/as and Vosotros/as.
Our new Commonly used Irregular Spanish Verbs are only irregular in the first person (Yo). For the rest of the persons (Tú, Él, Ella, Nosotros/as, Vosotros/as, Ellos/as) all of the conjugations are regular.
Commonly used Irregular Spanish verbs that are regular except for the first person:
Traducir: To translate
(Yo) Traduzco: I translate
Conocer: To know (people or places)
(Yo) Conozco: I know
Saber: To know (information)
(Yo) Sé: I know
Dar: To give
(Yo) Doy: I give
Salir: To go out
(Yo) Salgo: I go out
Hacer: To do/To make
(Yo) Hago: I do
Poner: To put
(Yo) Pongo: I put
Ver: To see
(Yo) Veo: I see
Caer: To fall
(Yo) Caigo: I fall
Caber: To fit
(Yo) Quepo: I fit
Traer: To bring
(Yo) Traigo: I bring
Lots of really useful Spanish verbs! And, although they are Irregular, they are actually very easy to remember and use because you only need to remember the different first person (Yo) conjugation.
Regular conjugations
To conjugate these verbs for the rest of the persons (Tú, Él, Ella, Nosotros/as, Vosotros/as, Ellos/as) we need to know the patterns to conjugate regular verbs which we saw back in lesson 20. Here they are again:
Yo Tú Él/Ella Nosotros/as Vosotros/as Ellos/Ellas |
-o -as/-es -a/-e -amos/-emos/-imos -áis/-éis/-ís -an/-en |
Full conjugation of some of the new verbs
Let’s see how to conjugate two of our new Commonly used Irregular Spanish Verbs for all persons:
Dar: To give
(Yo) Doy: I give
(Tú) Das: You give
(Él/Ella) Da: He/She gives
(Nosotros/as) Damos: We give
(Vosotros/as) Dais: You give
(Ellos/Ellas): Dan: They give
Salir: To go out
(Yo) Salgo: I go out
(Tú) Sales: You go out
(Él/Ella) Sale: He/She goes out
(Nosotros/as) Salimos: We go out
(Vosotros/as) Salís: You go out
(Ellos/Ellas): Salen: They go out
I hope you agree, these Commonly used Irregular Spanish Verbs are not that difficult to use and remember!
The patterns for conjugating regular Spanish verbs are key. Once you know those, you are all set for conjugating a vast quantity of regular and irregular Spanish verbs.
