Learn Spanish at Expanish Madrid: Your Ultimate Guide

Let’s be honest for a second. When you daydream about moving to Spain to learn Spanish, what do you see?

You probably aren’t picturing yourself hunched over a grammar workbook in a windowless room, staring at a whiteboard.

You’re picturing sunny afternoons, plates of jamón ibérico, trying to chat with a local barista, and evening walks through vibrant, crowded streets. You want the language, sure, but you also want the life.

Here at Go! Go! España, we totally get it. That’s why we only partner with language schools that understand the assignment, schools that take the Spanish language out of the textbook and put it right into the real world.

Today, we want to talk about one of our absolute favorite spots in the capital to make that dream a reality: Expanish Madrid.

Why Choose Madrid?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the school itself, let’s talk about the city. Madrid is… well, it’s magic. It doesn’t have the beach of Barcelona or the extreme southern flair of Málaga, but it has a heartbeat that you literally cannot find anywhere else in Europe.

Madrid is a massive city made up of tight-knit neighborhoods, each with its own hyper-specific vibe.

It’s a place where the nightlife famously bleeds into the morning, where world-class art museums sit next to century-old taverns, and where everyone, regardless of where they come from, somehow becomes a “Madrileño” within a month.

And right in the middle of all this action is the prestigious Salamanca neighborhood. It’s known for its wide, tree-lined avenues, stunning 19th-century architecture, and high-end cafes. It’s incredibly safe, beautifully maintained, and extremely well-connected by public transport.

And guess what? It’s exactly where Expanish Madrid is located.

Enter Expanish Madrid: Not Your Average Classroom

Expanish isn’t a newcomer to the Spanish teaching scene. They have over 20 years of experience scattered across their different centers in Spain and Latin America.

In 2026 alone, over 8,500 students from 87 different nationalities chose Expanish, which tells you they are doing something very, very right. But their Madrid center holds a special place in our hearts.

Located at Calle de Castelló 23, the school is practically touching distance from Parque del Buen Retiro (Retiro Park). We’re talking a three-block walk.

Imagine finishing your morning classes, grabbing a coffee to-go, and heading straight into Madrid’s most famous green oasis to review your notes or just hang out with your new international friends under the sun. It’s the ultimate student lifestyle.

Inside the building, the vibe is just as good. Expanish Madrid features 11 bright, fully-equipped classrooms. And yes, they have top-tier air conditioning and heating. If you know anything about Madrid’s climate, you know this is a non-negotiable, summer here is no joke, and winters are surprisingly crisp!

The school also has a super cozy student lounge where people mingle between classes, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and it’s fully wheelchair accessible.

Plus, they are heavily accredited, including by the prestigious IALC, and act as an official SIELE Authorized Examination Center. Basically, the academic rigor is world-class, but the environment feels like a relaxed community hub.

It also doesn’t hurt that they boast a stellar 4.9-star rating on Google from over 550 reviews, with an 80% “Excellent” student satisfaction score.

The Team Making It Happen

A school is only as good as its staff, and the crew at Expanish Madrid goes above and beyond. You aren’t just a number here.

You’ll likely bump into Javier, the Center Director, who brings over 30 years of education leadership to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Need help figuring out how to get from the airport to your apartment? Amy, the Housing & Transfers Coordinator, has your back. You’ll also see Felipe at the front desk ready to help with student services, and Elisa capturing all the fun school moments for social media.

They actively want you to feel at home from the second you walk through the doors.

Courses That Actually Fit Your Schedule

One of the things we hear most often from students is, “I studied Spanish in high school for four years, but I still freeze up when I have to order a coffee.”

Expanish fixes that. Their whole teaching philosophy is built around a communicative approach. They want you speaking from day one. You aren’t just memorizing verb tables; you are learning regional expressions, how to sound like a local, and how to navigate everyday situations with confidence.

Also, the classes are small. Like, really small. An average of 7 students per group means you literally can’t hide in the back row. You have to speak, and your teachers (who are all native speakers and absolute pros) will make sure you feel entirely comfortable doing it.

So, what are your options? Classes start every single Monday, which gives you total flexibility.

1. The Intensive Courses (20, 24, or 30 lessons/week)

This is the bread and butter of Expanish.

  • Intensive 20: Four classes a day. This is the sweet spot if you want to learn fast but still have half the day to explore Madrid’s museums and cafes.
  • Intensive Explore (24): This adds 4 “Spanish in the City” lessons to your week. It’s exactly what it sounds like, learning out in the wild, interacting with the city itself.
  • Intensive Plus (30): For those who mean serious business. This adds 6 conversation classes to your week. Your brain might feel like mush by Friday, but your Spanish will skyrocket.

2. Long-Term Courses (3 to 12 months)

Planning to stay a while? If you want to come to Spain on a student visa from outside the EU, you’ll need a long-term course that offers at least 20 hours a week.

Expanish is completely set up for this. And remember, our Go! Go! España team will help you navigate the entire visa paperwork process for free. It’s a win-win.

3. Evening Classes and Combined Options

Already working in Madrid? Or maybe you’re doing a different degree in the mornings? No problem. Expanish offers evening group classes from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (2 lessons a week).

You can also do a Combined Course, mixing regular group classes with 4 to 10 private lessons to target your specific weak points.

4. 50+ Spanish and Culture Program

Language learning absolutely doesn’t have an age limit. Expanish runs specialized 1 to 2-week programs for adults aged 50 and over.

The pace is comfortable, and it leans heavily into cultural immersion. As one recent 50-year-old student, Leah, wrote in her review: “I was delighted to find that there were a few other older learners and travelers like me… my Spanish improved in just one week. Really!”

5. Exam Prep (DELE & SIELE)

Need official certification for a university application or a job? They do dedicated exam prep.

Since the school is a SIELE testing center, you can literally study for weeks and then take the exam in the exact same building. Talk about a home-field advantage.

Where Are You Going to Live?

Alright, so the classes are sorted. Now, where do you put your suitcases? Housing can be the most stressful part of moving abroad, but Expanish makes it ridiculously easy.

They have three main options, and you can book them right alongside your course.

The Homestay Experience (Our Top Recommendation)

If you are serious about speaking Spanish, live with a Spanish family. Full stop. It might sound a bit intimidating at first, but it is the ultimate life hack for fluency.

Expanish carefully selects local host families located about 20 to 35 minutes from the school. You get a single or double room, half-board (meaning your breakfast and dinner are cooked for you, hello, home-cooked Spanish food!), and a built-in local guide.

They even change your sheets and towels weekly. It’s safe, comfortable, and you will learn so much vocabulary just by chatting over the dinner table.

Claraval Student Residence

Prefer to be surrounded by other students? The Claraval Student Residence (managed by Yugo) is awesome. It’s located just 15 minutes from the school by subway (straight down the L4 line).

You get your own individual room with a private kitchenette. The facilities here are basically a student’s dream: study rooms, a game room with a pool table, an outdoor area with table tennis, and a rooftop terrace where you can hang out with international peers.

There’s a 24/7 front desk, too. It’s perfect if you want independence but still want a built-in social life.

Shared Student Apartments

If you want something a bit more affordable and self-sufficient, go for a shared apartment. You’ll live with other international students (aged 18 to 39).

You get a furnished room, share a kitchen and bathroom, and cook for yourself. It’s a great way to make immediate friends while keeping costs down.

The Social Scene: Tardeos, Tapas, and Flamenco

We firmly believe that 50% of learning Spanish happens outside the classroom. Expanish clearly agrees, because their social calendar is absolutely packed.

They organize weekly activities that help you bond with your classmates while actually experiencing the culture of Madrid.

Some of their regular hits include:

  • Tardeo Expanish: A guided walk around the school’s beautiful neighborhood that ends exactly how all Spanish walks should, with a drink at a local bar.
  • Retiro Tours: Exploring the Rose Garden and sculptures of Madrid’s famous park just down the street.
  • Tasting of Spanish Cured Meats: Yes, they will literally teach you how to tell the difference between standard ham and the good stuff.
  • Painting and Wine Workshops: Let your creativity flow with a brush in one hand and a glass of Spanish wine in the other.
  • Flamenco Classes: Head to a local academy to learn the basics of Spain’s most passionate dance. (Don’t worry if you have two left feet, everyone is in the same boat).

It’s nearly impossible to feel lonely when your school is organizing stuff like this every week.
