Today, we\u2019ll be exploring the world of Spanish and French similarities<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain and France not only share a border, but they also share a major commonality in the origin of their languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to mention, both languages are some of the most popular in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish is spoken in countless countries across the globe such as Spain, Argentina, Peru<\/strong>, Chile,<\/strong> and more, while French is spoken in countries such as France, Belgium, Canada, Senegal<\/strong>, and beyond.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish and French Similarities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With millions of people around the globe speaking these languages, it\u2019s helpful when there are similarities between each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being able to understand Spanish will generally help you to understand French and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a quick look at how this is possible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Language Origin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You may remember reading that Spanish is a romance language<\/strong>, alongside other languages like Italian, Portuguese, and French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the romance languages all descend from colloquial Latin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, these languages continue to be some of the most widely spoken languages across the Western world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What ties romance languages together are their lexical similarities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that many vocabulary words tend to overlap between each language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These overlaps help those who are fluent in one language understand the other (to a degree!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish and French: Grammar and Alphabet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because both languages descend from Latin, both use the same 26 letter alphabet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that each language uses a similar writing system and similar grammar rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, each language uses gendered nouns<\/strong>, some similar verb conjugations<\/strong>, and word order<\/strong> in sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most apparent Spanish French similarities are the accent marks used by each language!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These accents help signify certain functions like which syllables should be stressed when spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some examples might be something like \u201cest\u00e1<\/strong>\u201d or \u201ccaf\u00e9<\/strong>\u201d in Spanish and \u201c\u00e9cole<\/strong>\u201d or \u201ch\u00f4tel<\/strong>\u201d in French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, while accents are used by each language, pronunciations are fairly distinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

French typically puts emphasis on final syllables<\/strong> and leans more heavily on certain vowels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversely, Spanish tends to use a more straightforward accent that puts emphasis on vowels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, French pronunciation can be more difficult than Spanish, as the Spanish phonetic system is a bit more straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish and French Similarities: Vocabulary Examples<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While there are small discrepancies between words, some Spanish and French language similarities are hard to miss!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the word for \u2018friend\u2019 in Spanish is \u201camigo<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cami<\/strong>\u201d in French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, the word for \u2018book\u2019 in French is \u201clivre<\/strong>\u201d and \u201clibro<\/strong>\u201d in Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also see echoes of Latin in both languages through words like \u2018truth\u2019 or \u2018love\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Truth\u2019 in Latin is \u201cveritas\u201d<\/strong>.  In Spanish, it is \u201cverdad<\/strong>\u201d and in French it is \u201cverit\u00e9<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Love\u2019 in Latin is \u201camor<\/strong>\u201d. In Spanish, the word doesn\u2019t change, but French adds an additional vowel to make it \u201camour<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are numerous examples of this, but one thing to remember when learning either Spanish or French is that both languages contain similar vocabulary words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may be able to pick up on certain words and phrases as you become more comfortable in either language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do Spanish and French languages roll their R’s?<\/h3>\n

Yes, however, the French “R” is more of a guttural sound than a trilled sound. A French R comes from the back of the mouth, whereas the Spanish R is rolled against the roof of the mouth. However, this is a very broad explanation of both sounds.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Will it be easier to learn French if I’m already fluent in Spanish?<\/h3>\n

Potentially, yes! Both Spanish and French share a high lexical similarity, which means many vocabulary words tend to overlap.
