After all, they both translate to the same thing! Both verbs mean \u201cto be\u201d in English. However, you can cause a lot of confusion by mixing these Spanish words. It\u2019s easy sometimes to <a href=\"https:\/\/gogoespana.com\/en\/blog\/mistaken-spanish-words\/\">mistake words in Spanish<\/a>, but learning the difference between <em>ser<\/em> and <em>estar<\/em> will make your Spanish conversations flow naturally. Scroll down to learn more about the key differences!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Main Difference Between Ser and Estar<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most important thing to know about these two verbs is this: <em>ser<\/em> is used to describe permanent situations and <em>estar<\/em> is used for temporary ones. There are a few exceptions which you can find in the next section, but this rule is the clearest. You\u2019ll also find examples of <strong>ways to use <em>ser<\/em> and <em>estar<\/em><\/strong> below. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ser<\/em> is used for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personality traits or physical appearance: <em>Ella es amable<\/em>. (She is nice.) <em>El es muy alto<\/em>. (He is very tall.) <em>La carpeta es verde.<\/em> (The folder is green.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Describing where someone is from: <em>Jack es de Australia<\/em>. (Jack is from Australia.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Telling the time: <em>\u00bfQue hora es? Son las cinco.<\/em> (What time is it? It\u2019s five.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talking about professions. Although jobs are changeable, it is related to your identity which is not changeable, so<em> ser<\/em> is used: <em>Ella es abogada<\/em>. (She is a lawyer.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Estar<\/em> is used for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Location. Of course, your location is temporary: <em>\u00bfEst<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e1<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>s en tu casa? No, estoy en la playa.<\/em> Are you at home? No, I\u2019m at the beach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Something you\u2019re doing right now (also known as the present continuous tense): <em>Estoy comiendo pizza.<\/em> I am eating pizza.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Describing someone\u2019s mood: <em>Ella est<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u00e1 triste porque su gato ha muerto<\/em>. She is sad because her cat died.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talking about death. Although being dead is permanent, in Spanish the verb <em>estar<\/em> is used: <em>Su gato est\u00e1 muerto<\/em>. The couple is on vacation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When It\u2019s Hard to Tell the Difference Between <em>Ser<\/em> and <em>Estar<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As with every set of grammar rules, there are exceptions and grey areas. There are some instances where the <strong>rules for <em>ser<\/em> and <em>estar<\/em><\/strong> don\u2019t apply as they should. One example is when someone is speaking about a planned event. The event is a temporary occasion, yet <em>ser<\/em> is the correct verb to use: <em>La fiesta es en la casa de mi madre.<\/em> (The party is at my mom\u2019s house.) Another change to the rules happens when describing hair color. Although hair color is changeable, the permanent verb <em>ser<\/em> is used. There are a few of these grey areas to pay attention to.
