This is the fifth lesson in our beginner level Spanish course and we will look at the Spanish verb Tener To Have<\/strong> and practice using it with some useful everyday Spanish vocabulary.<\/p>\n

In our previous lesson we saw our first Spanish verb Ser To Be<\/a> and practiced using it to describe where we and other people come from. We learned that verbs are doing\/action words and every sentence has one. In this Spanish Lesson 5 we will focus on another very important Spanish verb Tener To Have<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

El verbo Tener (The verb To Have)<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s see how to use this verb for Yo<\/em> (I), T\u00fa<\/em> (You), \u00c9l<\/em> (He) and Ella<\/em> (She):<\/p>\n

(Yo) Tengo: I have
\n(T\u00fa) Tienes: You have
\n(\u00c9l\/Ella) Tiene: He\/She has<\/p>\n

As explained in the previous lesson, the pronouns Yo, T\u00fa, \u00c9l, Ella<\/em> are all in brackets because they are optional.<\/p>\n

To practice using Tener<\/em> let’s first learn some useful Spanish vocabulary:<\/h4>\n

Perro: Dog
\nBicicleta: Bicycle
\nOrdenador: Computer
\nReloj: Watch
\nGuitarra: Guitar
\nGato: Cat
\nTel\u00e9fono M\u00f3vil: Mobile phone
\nCoche: Car<\/p>\n

We are going to make some sentences now using this new vocabulary and the Spanish numbers 1-100<\/a> we learned in Lesson 3:<\/p>\n

Yo tengo dos perros: I have two dogs
\nT\u00fa tienes tres gatos: You have three cats
\n\u00c9l tiene cuatro guitarras: He has four guitars
\nElla tiene cinco tel\u00e9fonos m\u00f3viles: She has five mobile phones<\/p>\n

You will see that with plural nouns (things) in Spanish we add S<\/strong> if the noun ends in a vowel and ES<\/strong> if the noun ends in a consonant.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s practice making some questions and negative sentences using Tener<\/em> and our new vocabulary:<\/h4>\n

\u00bfTienes perros?: Do you have dogs?
\nS\u00ed, tengo dos perros: Yes, I have two dogs
\nNo, no tengo perrros: No, I don\u2019t have dogs<\/p>\n

\u00bfTienes bicicleta? Do you have a bicycle?
\nS\u00ed, tengo tres bicicletas: Yes, I have three bicycles
\nNo, no tengo bicicleta: No, I don\u2019t have a bicycle<\/p>\n

As explained in the previous lesson, when making questions in Spanish you don\u2019t have to do anything more than put your regular\/positive sentence in questions marks if you are writing and make the intonation of a question if you are speaking. And, to make a sentence negative, we add No<\/strong> before the verb.<\/p>\n
