{"id":53581,"date":"2020-04-14T10:00:32","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T09:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gogoespana.com\/?p=53581"},"modified":"2023-12-14T15:50:29","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T14:50:29","slug":"the-family-in-spanish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gogoespana.com\/en\/blog\/the-family-in-spanish\/","title":{"rendered":"The Family in Spanish: Spanish Lesson 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>This is the fourteenth lesson in our beginner level Spanish course and we will look at The Family in Spanish and practice describing family members with the Spanish verbs <a href=\"https:\/\/gogoespana.com\/en\/blog\/spanish-verbs-ser-and-estar\">Ser and Estar<\/a>.<\/h4>\n<p>First let&#8217;s take a look at some useful vocabulary related to <strong>The Family in Spanish<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>(El) Marido: Husband<br \/>\n(La) Mujer \/ (La) Esposa: Wife<br \/>\n(El) Padre: Father<br \/>\n(La) Madre: Mother<br \/>\n(El) Hijo: Son<br \/>\n(La) Hija: Daughter<br \/>\n(El) Hermano: Brother<br \/>\n(La) Hermana: Sister<br \/>\n(El) Abuelo: Grandfather<br \/>\n(La) Abuela: Grandmother<br \/>\n(El) Nieto: Grandson<br \/>\n(La) Nieta: Granddaughter<br \/>\n(El) T\u00edo: Uncle<br \/>\n(La) T\u00eda: Aunt<br \/>\n(El) Sobrino: Nephew<br \/>\n(La) Sobrina: Niece<br \/>\n(El) Primo: Cousin (boy)<br \/>\n(La) Prima: Consin (girl)<\/p>\n<h4>Plurals<\/h4>\n<p>With plurals of members of <strong>The Family in Spanish<\/strong> you need to add &#8216;<em>S<\/em>&#8216;. For example, <em>Brothers<\/em> would be <em>Hermanos<\/em> and <em>Uncles<\/em> would be <em>T\u00edos<\/em>. If there are two or more male family members you will use <em>Los<\/em> <em>(The)<\/em> rather than <em>El<\/em> (e.g. <em>Los hermanos<\/em>) and if there are two or more female family members you will use <em>Las<\/em> <em>(The)<\/em> rather than <em>La (e.g. Las hermanas)<\/em>. If you wish to describe a mix of male and female family members, you always choose the male option and add the plural &#8216;<em>S<\/em>&#8216; at the end. For example, if you wish to say <em>The Cousins<\/em> and there are three female cousins and one male cousin you will say <em>Los primos<\/em>. Other plurals include: Los padres (the parents), Los hijos (the children\/sons), Los abuelos (the grandparents\/grandfathers), Los nietos (the grandchildren\/grandsons), Los t\u00edos (the uncles and aunts\/uncles), Los sobrinos (the nephews and nieces\/nephews).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gogoespana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/The-Family-in-Spanish-geese.jpg\" alt=\"The Family in Spanish geese\" width=\"1026\" height=\"598\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Let&#8217;s practice<\/h4>\n<p>Next we are going to practice describing <strong>The Family in Spanish<\/strong> using the vocabulary we have just seen with the Spanish verbs <a href=\"https:\/\/gogoespana.com\/en\/blog\/spanish-verb-ser-to-be\/\">Ser (To be)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gogoespana.com\/en\/blog\/spanish-verb-estar-to-be\/\">Estar (To be)<\/a> that we learned earlier in this course. Before we begin you should know that <em>Who<\/em> is <em>Quien<\/em> in Spanish (e.g.<em> \u00bfQuien es Pedro?: Who is Pedro?<\/em>) and we use <em>De<\/em> when in English you would use the possessive apostrophe <em>&#8216;s (e.g. Pedro es hermano de Silvia: Pedro is Silvia&#8217;s brother).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00bfQui\u00e9n es Rebeca?: Who is Rebeca?<br \/>\nRebeca es la t\u00eda de Carlos: Rebeca is Carlos&#8217; aunt.<br \/>\n\u00bfDe d\u00f3nde es Rebeca?: Where is Rebeca from?<br \/>\nRebeca es de Cuba: Rebeca is from Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfC\u00f3mo de llama el abuelo de Miguel?: What is the name of Miguel&#8217;s grandfather?<br \/>\nEl abuelo de Miguel se llama Jos\u00e9: Miguel&#8217;s grandfather is called Jos\u00e9.<br \/>\n\u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 Jos\u00e9 ahora?: Where is Jos\u00e9 now?<br \/>\nJos\u00e9 est\u00e1 en el bar: Jos\u00e9 is in the bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfCu\u00e1ntos primos tiene Mar\u00eda?: How many cousins does Mar\u00eda have?<br \/>\nMar\u00eda tiene seis primos. Tres primos y tres primas: Mar\u00eda has six cousins. Three male cousins and three female cousins.<br \/>\n\u00bfQui\u00e9nes son?: Who are they?<br \/>\nSon Felipe, Alfredo, Alberto, Irene, Ana y Bel\u00e9n: They are Felipe, Alfredo, Alberto, Irene, Ana and Bel\u00e9n.<\/p>\n<p>That is all for this lesson about <strong>The Family in Spanish<\/strong>.
